3 Restful, Natural Remedies for a Cozy Night’s Sleep

After a long day of work or an exhausting week, you get home, kick off your shoes and the only thing you want to do is get your head down for a good night’s sleep. Much to your dismay, this isn’t always possible. You can toss and turn all night desperately trying to sleep with no success. The more annoyed you get with yourself, the more unlikely it becomes that you will achieve any sleep at all.

If you are stressed, this too can inhibit your ability to sleep. Or if you have a lot on your mind and thoughts are busy rushing through your brain, it can also be a challenge to get some of those all important Z’s. Instead of rushing to the drug store to get yourself some sleeping pills, turn to your own cupboards. Without knowing it you probably have all of the ingredients that you need to make your own bedtime remedies. Below we have some of the most comforting and delightful remedies for you to try in order to enhance your natural sleep – chemical and drug free!

1. Tangy Cherry Sleep Juice

If you are partial to a zingy flavor then this cherry sleep juice will be an extremely enjoyable sleep remedy to treat yourself to. Beautiful cherries are bursting with melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that is responsible for regulating your sleep-wake cycles. You will need:

  • 7oz of tart cherry juice or you can blend fresh cherries after removing the pits
  • 2 drops of vanilla extract

You can serve cold or gently heat the mixture. Serve up in your favourite glass and drink 30-45 minutes before you go to bed.

2. Chamomile & Lavender tea

Chamomile & lavender have been used for centuries to aid in natural sleep. Why though? Chamomile is known for it’s sedative effects and helps to comfort and relax your brain. Lavender’s aroma helps you to unwind and can actually have effects on your brain waves that can induce a sense of calm and drowsiness. What will you need for this remedy?

  • Roughly 1 teaspoon of fresh lavender buds
  • Roughly 1 teaspoon of fresh chamomile buds
  • 7 oz. of warm/hot water
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • Loose-leaf tea strainer

Place all the buds into the strainer and pop it in your cup. Pour over the hot water and allow the mixture to steep for around ten minutes. The longer you leave it, the stronger the taste. Remove the strainer and stir in your teaspoon of honey and consume 30-45 minutes before you go to bed.

3. Banana & Cinnamon tea 

Seriously comforting and delicious this sleep remedy will ensure you have a beautiful night’s sleep every single night. Banana contains a substance called Tryptophan, which is an amino acid known for helping combat insomnia.

It’s simple to make and only requires very little preparation. All you need is:

  • 1 whole banana without the skin
  • 7 oz. of water
  • 1 sprinkle of cinnamon

Put the banana in a pan and pour over the water, heat the mixture gently then sprinkle the cinnamon into the concoction. Strain the liquid and serve.  Consume this one 30-45 minutes before you go to sleep.
